The Move-Out Cleaning Checklist That Gets Your Deposit Back

March 4, 2026 Power Cleaning Services LLC

Under New Jersey's security deposit law, a landlord can't charge you for normal wear and tear — but they can absolutely charge you for cleaning. That distinction is where most deposit disputes live, and it's why a move-out clean is the cheapest insurance you can buy on a rental.

The standard isn't 'tidy.' It's 'as clean as it was when you got the keys,' judged by someone walking an empty unit with nothing to distract them. An empty room hides nothing. Every mark on a baseboard, every ring in a cabinet, every crumb in a drawer track is visible.

Start in the kitchen, because that's where deductions come from. Inside the oven, including the racks and the glass door. Inside and behind the refrigerator — pull it out, clean the coils area and the floor underneath, and wash every shelf and drawer. Inside every cabinet and drawer, not just the fronts. The range hood filter. The dishwasher gasket and filter. The backsplash and the grout behind the sink.

Bathrooms come second. Descale the shower and tub — soap scum and hard-water film read as neglect even on a surface that's structurally fine. Toilets inside, outside, and the base where it meets the floor. Mirrors, fixtures, exhaust fan cover, and the medicine cabinet inside. Grout lines get scrubbed, not wiped.

Then the whole unit: inside every closet, all floors vacuumed and mopped including under where furniture stood, baseboards wiped, door frames and switch plates cleaned, window sills and tracks cleared, blinds dusted, and light fixtures emptied of what's collected in them.

The five things tenants miss every single time: window tracks, the inside top edge of cabinet doors, the refrigerator drip pan area, the dryer lint housing, and the exhaust fan covers in bathrooms. Every one of them is visible to a landlord who knows where to look, and they all take a professional twenty minutes total.

If you're moving inside Morris County — Randolph, Roxbury, Rockaway, Madison, Parsippany — we do this as a fixed-price move-out clean, usually in a single day, on the date your lease ends. Landlords, realtors and property managers use us for the same job from the other side.

Call (267) 910-6863 with your lease-end or closing date and we'll work backward from it.
